Get funky: Meet the brewers turning Central Oregon air into beer
October 31, 2025
1 minute readBend in winter is the kind of trip you and yours will pin to a highlight reel for years. Think powder-day adrenaline, fire-pit nights, and all the small adventures in between. It’s where you can ski all day, sip something local by sunset, and fall asleep somewhere fun without breaking your budget. Whether you’re here for mellow forest trails, big-mountain thrills, or simply a change of scenery that feels good for the soul, Bend makes it easy to reconnect, recharge, and play. Here’s your guide to building the perfect long-weekend escape built for active stays that will get your heart pumping.
Bend has more than 3,000 rooms and countless vacation rentals, and you don’t need to deplete your budding nest egg to stay in them. Whether you’re chasing powder, sneaking away for a long-weekend reset, or just want a warm home base between winter adventures, there’s a stay in Bend that fits your budget and vibe. Here are a few of my favorites.
If you want something indie, hyper-local, and very Bend, book the Bud & Breakfast, a quirky two-bedroom Airbnb in the Box Factory area perched above a popular dispensary. You get walkability to coffee shops, food carts, the river trail, breweries, and wine bars. Each stay comes with a gift card for the dispensary downstairs. Perfect for couples or small groups looking for a sunny, “green” space to relax.
Bright, modern, and surprisingly practical, Home2 Suites is a solid option for road-trippers and gear-laden adventurers. Rooms come with kitchenettes, plenty of storage, and space to sprawl out your ski or snowboard gear. It’s close to Bend’s shopping and dining corridors, with quick access to both downtown and the Cascade Lakes Highway, making morning mountain runs easy.
Simple, clean, and quietly convenient, My Place Hotel wins for travelers who want the basics done right: full kitchenettes, comfy beds, and easy parking. This budget-friendly abode is dog-friendly and perfect for the folks who really just want a home base between adventures. Bonus: lots of westside favorites are only minutes away.
Perhaps the greatest deal in town! If your ideal winter weekend includes meeting new people, swapping trail beta over a beer, and staying in a place with character instead of corridors, this is your spot. This funky, community-driven hostel puts you right on the edge of downtown with easy access to cafés, breweries, and shops. Get a private room (with a shared bathroom), then grab a pint from the onsite beer garden, and warm up around the outdoor fire pits.
When you stay in a hotel, vacation rental, bed and breakfast, or any other lodging property in city limits, your dollars contribute directly to maintaining, improving, and protecting the places we all love. That’s because a portion of what you’ll pay goes right back into creating sustainable experiences everyone can enjoy. New trails. Improved river access. Even cultural events that are worth the road-trip alone. Thank you!

Located no more than 40 minutes away from the farthest homes and hotels in Bend, Mt. Bachelor is hands down one of the best places to ski and snowboard in the northwest with more than 4,300 acres of lift-serviced terrain for beginners to experts. Be sure to get your tickets in advance online to score extra savings. Want to learn to ski? The Ski or Board in 4 program gets you four days of lessons, rentals AND a full season pass, making this more like a $ experience.
If you want to skip the resort but still stay active, sign up for a guided fat-tire biking experience with Cog Wild that includes bike rental, shuttle, and complimentary beer or hot drinks at the end. Sign up for a guided nighttime snowshoe adventure with Wanderlust Tours and spend an evening wandering through a quiet forest to a bonfire in the snow.
Make that a $0-experience for backcountry skiers and snowboarders. Get a free uphill pass from Mt. Bachelor’s West Village ticket area for unlimited laps on the ski area’s “Cone” or keep working your up about 1,200 vertical feet to the Pine Marten Lodge for lunch and drinks. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the route and the rules before heading out. For a true backcountry experience, skin your way up Tumalo Mountain across from Mt. Bachelor for a woodsy adventure among old growth trees. (You’ll need a sno-park permit.)
Go crosscountry skiing at Virginia Meissner, Swampy Lakes, or Wanoga sno-parks on miles of free, groomed trails. You can find great snowshoeing routes out here, too. Don’t walk on the groomed tracks! Get a sno-park permit, too.
Bend also has loads of wonderful winter hikes. Head east into the Oregon Badlands Wilderness for high desert trails that rarely hold snow or bring the snowshoes or cross country skis for a five-mile round trip adventure back to the spectacular Tumalo Falls from the Skyliner Sno-Park.
Spend a few hours ice skating at the Pavillion or Seventh Mountain Resort, where you can warm up by a fire inside.
Yes, Bend is famous for its enormous variety in breweries (27!) and taprooms, most of which also have non-alcoholic options, too. Here’s where I tend to send friends and family when they come to town:
Mom and dad still offering to buy? I’d go to Ken’s Artisan Pizza for pistachio, mortadella, oven-fired amazingness or to Bosa Food & Drink for rigatoni with housemade fennel sausage. Lady Bird Cultural Society goes Mediterranean with a wood-fired element, including fire-roasted duck, housemade pastas, and seared scallops served in a vintage-elegant atmosphere. Yoli’s piping hot Dolsot Bibimbap is hearty and flavorful. Perfect for a cold weather lunch or dinner.
Head to spots like Dear Mom Cafe for outstanding northern Thai, Active Culture for vegan and vegetarian dishes that go as big on flavor as they do with healthy ingredients, and Kobe Sushi for Japanese noodles and creative rolls in a no-frills setting.
They include catching happy hour specials, like the $10 Portuguese rice dish, at Cafe Sintra in downtown Bend, the $10 crunch wrap at Papi Chulo’s, and the $9 fajitas at Parillia Grill where you can also score $2 beers all day long.
For more fun that goes big on ambiance without breaking the bank, hang out by the fire pits at Crosscut Warming Hut No. 5 then find excellent deals on used outdoor equipment at the Gear Fix, Second Wind Sports, and Latitude 44 Sports. Get your morning climbing workout in at Bend Rock Gym then catch a matinee at Bend’s favorite indie arthouse cinema, the Tin Pan Theater.
Have fun out there and thanks for coming!
