Get funky: Meet the brewers turning Central Oregon air into beer
October 31, 2025
1 minute readOf all of Bend’s seasons, winter is the one that rewards those who know where to go. It’s a time to carve bright turns down sun-lit slopes or glide through the hush of a snow-draped forest. This is Bend’s unhurried, all-chill season. There will be fires and fireside drinks and bellies warmed by hearty fare—all the moments that remind you how good good experiences can be. Forget the crowds; winter in Bend is about comfort, quality, and adventure at a pace that lets you actually enjoy it.
Getting here is easy, too—just a few scenic hours from Portland, Seattle, Medford, or Boise—but once here Bend feels a world apart with sun, snow, and a welcoming city that runs at your speed. Here’s how to plan the perfect long winter weekend.
Arrive in time to catch $3 pints and Korean hot wings on Thursdays at UPP Liquids
Ski from the summit of a 9,000-foot volcano at Mt. Bachelor.
Cross country ski the free trails along the Cascade Lakes Highway.
Take a snowcat ride out to Elk Lake Lodge for lunch.
Sample Moroccan ribs at Papillon followed by live music at Silver Moon.
You need a home base, and Bend has what you need. Mt. Bachelor works with Bend hotels to offer awesome deals. For a couple’s weekend or milestone celebration, try the historic Westman Hotel, opening December 19 in Bend’s 1932 post-office building. Splurge on a fire-pit patio king room or the Post Master Suite. Set in a converted 1930s Catholic schoolhouse, McMenamins Old St. Francis School blends Bend’s quirky soul with cozy, downtown comfort, with a fantastic soaking pool, a movie theater with beer and couches, and multiple bars—one of which is hidden in a broom closet (sorta). For quick access to Mt. Bachelor and the Sno-Parks, LOGE Bend on the southwest side keeps things easy and social. The Peppertree Inn goes simple and convenient, with clean, comfortable rooms, free breakfast, and easy access to both downtown Bend and the road to Mt. Bachelor.
After unpacking, head downtown and stretch your legs along the boardwalk at Drake Park, where snow and moonlight ignite Mirror Pond into a frosty tableau. Dinner? Grab Moorish ribs at Papillon, a Moroccan place below Blissful Spoon next to Bend Brewing Co. Or, for a livelier scene (and some of the best beer in the country), wander over to UPP Liquids in the Box Factory for $3 pints every Thursday. Pair a crisp rice lager with their crispy-sticky Korean chicken wings and toast to a weekend well begun.
Ease into your first full Bend day with a hearty breakfast at Palmer’s Café, a local standby for eggs, bacon, and diner coffee. If you’re heading straight to the slopes, stop by Great Harvest Bakery downtown for a fluffy biscuit sandwich to go.
It’s a 30-minute drive to Mt. Bachelor, where mid-week lift lines vanish and corduroy stretches for miles across the 4,300-acres of skiing on a volcanic cone. Cross-country skiers can explore 56 km of groomed trails from the Nordic Center, while snowshoers follow 15 km of dedicated paths. Nearby sno-parks such as Swampy Lakes, Wanoga and Virginia Meissner add community-maintained cross country trails, winter fat bike trails, and warming huts (sno-park permit required). For a guided option, sign up for the free, ranger-led Discover Your Forest snowshoe tours at Bachelor’s base area—fresh air, zero crowds, and a mini-lesson in forest ecology.
Refuel with a pile of nachos and Bloody Mary by the fire at the Rock Bar, then head back to town for après at River Pig, where outdoor heaters, whiskey, and lively energy keep spirits high. Dinner choices abound: food-cart variety at Podski, chicken Milanese and cocktails at Dear Irene, or spicy noodle bowls at Spork for casual perfection. Cap the night with bourbon cheesecake and a pint of Black Butte Porter at Deschutes Public House. Hashtag winning.
If you saved big on a multi-day Bachelor ticket, be out the door early. Otherwise, start slow with a pastry and cappuccino at Café Des Chutes, or brunch at Lemon Tree or Chow. On clear days, stroll the Old Mill District and beyond; a pair of microspikes (like Kahtoola’s, available at REI or FootZone) will make the riverside trail walkable even with patches of ice.
For the ultimate winter outing, book a snowcat shuttle to Elk Lake Resort, a historic lodge deep in the Cascades and unreachable by car all winter. The ten-mile ride down the Cascade Lakes Highway passes the frozen silhouettes of South Sister and Broken Top before delivering you to a warm lunch with mountain views.
Behind the brew: Funky Fauna Artisan Ales
Back in town, shake off the snow at Funky Fauna Artisan Ales, where farmhouse beers and cheese boards define mellow après. (Curious about their story? Our profile on Funky Fauna dives deeper into what sets them apart.) Dinner at Jia Asian Street Kitchen brings creative cocktails, Szechuan heat, and a robot waiter named Bao Bao that always gets it right. Before calling it a night, stop at the new Farewell Market—opening mid-December 2025—to stock up on Oregon wine and local treats to take home.
If you’ve still got energy, catch live music at Volcanic Theater Pub, Midtown Ballroom, or Silver Moon. You can still be in bed by 10:23 p.m.—or not. Your call.
Sundays call for simple pleasures: classic eggs and toast at the dark and dive-y D & D Bar and Grill, farm-fresh scrambles at Jackson’s Corner, or a breakfast burrito the size of a snowboard boot at Burrito Hooch.
Before heading home, visit the High Desert Museum, especially if you’re bound south. Its raptors, wildlife exhibits, and stories of the region’s Native peoples make a thoughtful finale. Northbound travelers might detour to Smith Rock State Park for a quiet winter hike along the Crooked River, where the towering cliffs glow orange against the snow. If you’re driving west over Santiam Pass, stretch your legs or cross-country ski the gentle four-mile Hashbrown Loop at Potato Hill Sno-Park (sno-park permit required).
That’s your blueprint for a perfect long winter weekend in Bend—rosy cheeks, fresh mountain photos, and that satisfied feeling that you’ve done your vacation right. Now all that’s left is to plan your triumphant return.
