Matt Mendes: A legacy forged in the currents of the Deschutes

The Deschutes River runs deep through Matt Mendes’ veins, an unbreakable bond forged by generations on these waters. As a Warm Springs tribal member and a seasoned guide, Matt brings reverence and passion to every cast, every ripple. He first took up the fly rod right here, at his grandfather’s side—a Native guide who, years ago, opened up miles of this pristine river for others to experience.

To Matt, guiding isn’t just a livelihood—it’s a legacy, a way to protect and honor the land. He’s out here, season after season, not only to share the thrill of hooking trout and steelhead with guests from all over the world but to cultivate respect for this place. From litter clean-ups to tree plantings, his work safeguards the river’s future, instilling in his children—and the next generation of tribal youth—a profound appreciation for their heritage.

The Deschutes, Matt says, has an energy that keeps people coming back. Whether it’s the playful trout of early spring, the legendary steelhead runs of autumn, or the quiet grace of winter waters, each season offers its own kind of magic. And for Matt, there’s simply no place he’d rather be than here, with the river as both guide and constant companion.

A special thank you to the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation for their generosity and for allowing us to create this video on their sacred land. Matt’s deep respect for his community and the reservation’s natural resources is at the heart of his work. He reminds us all:

“We are blessed to have such rich natural resources on the reservation. It is our duty as tribal members not to take advantage of these blessings or take them for granted. As tribal members, we need to respect Mother Earth and pick up after ourselves so the next generation can enjoy them too.”
