Guided by the wild: A forage-to-table journey with a man named ‘Rooster’
December 17, 2024
1 minute readThe mountains welcome everyone. With the same crisp air, the same rush of speed, the same quiet awe of snow-covered peaks—these moments should belong to all. But for athletes with disabilities, access to that experience isn’t always as simple as stepping into skis and gliding downhill. That’s where Oregon Adaptive Sports (OAS) comes in—removing obstacles, creating possibilities, and ensuring that recreation at Mt. Bachelor is for everyone.
What began in 1996 as a small group of volunteers determined to get more kids on the mountain has grown into a transformative force, providing state-of-the-art adaptive equipment, expert instruction, and a pathway to independence through sport. The impact speaks for itself. Skiers who once thought the slopes were out of reach now carve turns with confidence. First-time participants discover not just a new sport, but a new sense of possibility. And for lifelong skiers adapting to new circumstances, OAS offers a way to reconnect with the mountains and rediscover the thrill of the sport they love. The volunteers and instructors? They walk away changed, too—reminded that joy is universal, resilience is contagious, and the best days are the ones we create together.
Through adaptive equipment, personalized coaching, and financial assistance, OAS ensures that skiing isn’t just possible—it’s accessible. Whether it’s a sit ski for those with limited mobility, customized guidance for neurodiverse athletes, or simply the encouragement to take that first run, OAS makes the mountains a place for everyone. And for those who witness it, whether as participants or supporters, it’s proof that adventure is at its best when it belongs to all.
This story was made possible through the dedication and passion of those who believe adventure should belong to everyone.
